Our Impact

Over 210 Clients Served

Since opening in May 2016, we have supported more than 210 human trafficking survivors referred from law enforcement, other service providers, and the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

We have served a diverse population of clients from the United States, the Philippines, Honduras, Mexico, El Salvador, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Nigeria, and other countries.

Of the human trafficking survivors supported by the SAFE Center, 90% are female and 9% are male and 33% are labor trafficking survivors and 61% are sex trafficking survivors. The remaining 6% are survivors of both sex and labor trafficking.

Over 80 Trainings Provided, Reaching Over 2,500 People

The SAFE Center team has delivered numerous presentations and trainings to increase awareness of human trafficking throughout Maryland and the metropolitan Washington D.C. area. Our staff members regularly deliver trainings and panel presentations on sex trafficking, labor trafficking, trauma, and mental health therapy techniques to raise awareness about trafficking among social workers, lawyers, medical professionals, faith communities, school counselors, foreign embassy officials, university students, and community members.

UMD SAFE Center Team Statement on Racial Injustice

The UMD SAFE Center decries the structural racism that remains as a toxic legacy of our country’s history and permeates our society today, and we are working to ensure that we are an actively anti-racist institution.
