Steptoe & Johnson, LLP Honors SAFE Center at International Women’s Day Event

March 8, 2020

In honor of International Women’s Day, the Washington D.C.-based international law firm Steptoe and Johnson LLP, where SAFE Center Founder and Director Susan Esserman is a partner, hosted an event to recognize and promote the SAFE Center’s mission to serve human trafficking survivors throughout the region. Since the SAFE Center’s launch in 2016, the firm has faithfully supported the Center and our clients through legal and practical advice, partnership on legal cases, crucial logistical aid such as large donations of furniture and equipment, and generous financial assistance. The SAFE Center team is incredibly grateful for the firm’s commitment to public service, its pro bono work on behalf of human trafficking survivors, and its steadfast support of the SAFE Center and the clients we serve.

We especially thank Philip West, Steptoe’s chair, and Gwen Renigar, Steptoe’s Vice Chair, for hosting the SAFE Center’s team in honor of International Women’s Day. We also extend our thanks to the University of Maryland, Baltimore President Dr. Bruce Jarrell for joining us at the event and for championing the SAFE Center’s cause since our founding.

UMD SAFE Center Team Statement on Racial Injustice

The UMD SAFE Center decries the structural racism that remains as a toxic legacy of our country’s history and permeates our society today, and we are working to ensure that we are an actively anti-racist institution.
